    As of 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the total generation of Municipal Solid Waste (also known as trash or garbage) is aroudn 249.9 million tons. In 2010 85 million tons of the 250 produced was recycled, meaning that 165 million tons was thrown into landfills during that year alone. To calculate the entire amount of trash in lanfills is quite tricky, because one would have to account for the history of landfills and trash as well as rates of decomposition.
