Most plastic water bottles on the market today are made with polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The FDA has concluded that PET is safe for repeated use, as long as the container is cleaned thoroughly with hot soapy water and dried completely between uses. Almost any plastic water bottle purchased in stores, vending machines, restaurants, etc. will be just as sanitary as any other drinking conatiner, provided it is cleaned like any other food container. PET will not leech dangerous chemicals into your drinking water. The biggest threat is bacteria growth due to poor cleaning habits. Therefore, plastic water bottles are safe to drink from just as long as any other plastic food container.
