Males need an area of 15-30 square miles.  They defend their territory and if another cheetah intrudes they are likely to be attacked or killed.  Cheetahs sometimes live in coalitions (two or three that are related).  This allows them to defend their territory more effictively as well as hunt larger animals.

Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world, with the ability to accelerate from 0 to 45 mph in 2.5 seconds and can reach speeds of up to 64 mph.  Although these speeds are extreme and one would assume that they need great expanses of land in order to hunt and live, the extreme speeds can only be sustained for short periods of time making the actual amount of land a cheetah needs much smaller than assumed, as mcoffey mentioned.

Also, cheetahs do not ambush their prey, instead they stalk it from a measley distance of 100 yards and tend to rely on their speed to capture and kill.

A cheetah needs as much territory as necessary to feed adequately; this is dependent upon prey availability.
