Mount Pinatubo released approximately 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide gas. 90% of this was released from the volcano during the nine hour eruptions on June 15, 1991. This eruption was the largest disturbance to the Earth’s stratosphere since 1883 and greatly contributed to the ozone hole over Antarctica.
