The recommended daily values for sugar intake are as follows: Adult Female – 20 grams, Adult Male – 36 grams and for children it’s 12 grams. Sugars which occur naturally within foods are to be favored over sugars added to processed foods.
The American Heart Association recommends 6 teaspoons or 24 grams of sugar for women and 9 teaspoons or 36 grams daily. This equals about 100 calories a day for women and 150 calories a day for men based on healthy caloric intake. This is tricky though as once you start paying attention to sugar intake you find that it is found in everything from the double chocolate brownie fudge sundae ice cream (well you knew that, didn’t you?!) to the supposedly all natural veggie marinara sauce that you thought was harmless.
The American Heart Association got involved because too much of sugar can wreak havoc on your body, putting you at risk for elevated blood fat levels leading to cardiovascular disease and even scarier (or maybe just as much) too much sugar can put you at risk for type II diabetes (this is the kind you can get from being overweight and unhealthy).
