The answer to this question is still unclear even amongst the scientific community. Early last month, it was reported by the federal government that only one-fourth of the spilled oil remained, or approximately 53.5 million gallons. However, not long after that announcement was released, a report from the University of Georgia expressed fears that three-quarters of the oil spilled remains in the Gulf. Researchers are still continuing to monitor the situation.
