How much smaller does the ice get throughout the year in the arctic?

This varies every year depending on how warm the summer is and how cold the winter is and much snow there is. In 2007 there was a huge amount of media coverage around how much the arctic ice had melted, and people were speculating that the ice would never reach its former size again. It did though in the winter of 2007/2008. The ice amount fluxuated 10 million square kilometers over that year.
