How much sediment does rivers dump into the ocean?

It depends on the location and type of river. Rivers like the Amazon and the Nile deposit an average 190 and 40 tons per square kilometer of sediment per year, respectively. However, smaller rivers that start flowing from high in the mountains and empty into the ocean can carry up to 32,000 tons per square kilometer of sediment every year (as was found in the Cropp River in New Zealand).
