Most organizations recommend not exceeding 2,400 milligrams per day for healthy adults. Factors such as diabetes or high blood pressure would require a smaller intake. The FDA is considering whether to restrict salt amounts in foods, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute estimates that cutting our sodium intake in half would prevent 150,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease per year.
