Hydrogen actually isn’t an energy source, it carries energy, much like a battery would. Hydrogen has to be created and you have to put energy into it in order to get energy out. Approximately 96% is made from fossil fuels to create the oil needed in oil refineries and to make partially hydrogenated oil (which is the bad kind if you were wondering).
Hydrogen is also made from other sources (mainly from fossil fuels) but also from natural gas, wind turbines and from water via electrolysis. Eventually experts hope to be able to use renewable energy to make more hydrogen from water via electrolysis.
