Quantifying the exact amount of pollution released in the production of electric vehicle batteries is an impossible task. However, the interest involved with this question is in whether or not the additional pollution released in the production and disposal of a hybrid battery can be offset by the reduction in fuel consumption over the lifetime of a car. As we are now in the middle of the first significant generation of hybrid vehicles the results are still being studied, but most sources agree as long as the battery lasts for the expected lifetime of a car (150,000-200,000 miles) it will more than make up for the extra pollution from the battery in reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
