That’s a broad question that really depends on the type of car you drive. As a group, motor vehicles account for 72% of nitrogen oxide and 52% of reactive hydrocarbons, both of which are the ingredients for smog. SUVs on average put out 28 pounds of CO2 per gallon of gas as opposed to an average car (20.4 pounds of CO2 per gallon of gas). Emissions from cars is far more than those from power plants so the steps in energy sustainability starts with us, the consumer, and our driving decisions.
