One of the benefits of buses is that they reduce traffic. Try to imagine every child that normally rides a school bus instead being driven to school by their parents; it would be a polluting nightmare on the road. Although this is one of the perks of riding the bus, there are many ways this form of transportation cause unnecessary harm to the environment.
First off, when buses stand for long periods of time they release a lot of pollutants into the air. This could easily be prevented by turning the engine off if standing for too long. Also, and especially with older buses, the exhaust can actually seep into the cabin and affect children, particularly those with asthma. So although buses do keep fewer cars off the road, there are still additional ways they could avoid polluting the air.
