The transportation of food results in many negative environmental impacts. A part of the problem is that the price of international export is kept artificially low due to a number of international treaties that prohibit a tax on fuel for international trade. This means that companies feel it is okay to ship food items thousands of miles because the cost is not very overwhelming. According to research, the full environmental cost of transportation of food to the US could be as much as $3.8 billion.
