According to a 2001 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study, only 7% of the post-consumer plastic in the U.S. is recycled. A 2008 EPA study showed that Americans recycled about 30 million tons of plastic in that year. As of 2009, there were 129,925,421 households in the U.S. This would mean that the average household recycles 461.8 pounds of plastic every year. Even though these statistics are taken from separate years, the results should be comparable to the current amount.
