How much plastic could be saved if we banned plastic bags from grocery stores?

In 2001 it was estimated that between 500 million and 1 trillion plastic bags were used in grocery stores worldwide.  While that is a big difference between the upper and lower limit of the estimate, either way, if we stopped using plastic bags we would be saving an incredible amount of plastic.  The use of these bags wouldn’t be so problematic if more people took advantage of the opportunity to recycle them.
