Today, about one third of the trash generated in the US is recycled. That’s a big improvement over a couple of decades ago; in the mid 1980s, only about a tenth of our trash made it into the recycling. However with two thirds of our garbage going into the landfill, there is still a lot of room for improvements. Paper accounts for more of what ends up in the landfill than any other material; this is tragic because paper is so easy to recycle. In many cities, even paper with tape or staples attached to it can be put in the recycling; it’s a good idea to brush up on the rules for your particular area’s recycling program, but chances are there is a lot of stuff heading for the landfill that could have been recycled.
