Alot of energy is used in the production and sale of food. In fact, a stuy done in 2000 said that 10% of all energy usage was from food production, transport, or sale. About 40% of the energy used in the food business is put towards the production of fertilizers and pesticides. This takes about 5.5 gallons of fossil fuels per acre. 23% of the energy usage is from the packaging and processing. As far as transportation, the average food product travels 1500 miles before being consumed.
