According to one estimate, organic food makes up 2.6% of total food sales in the U.S. However this is probably a smaller percentage than actually is produced, because there are many farmers that grow using organic methods that do not get certified, and then there are all the home gardens and hobby farms.
According to the OTA $13.8billion of organic food was sold in 2005. This is 2.5% of the total food sales of $556billion for that year. Organic food is on the rise. In 1998 there were only $4.2billion of organic food sold. That means organic food sales tripled between 1998 and 2005.
