According to ExxonMobile, the amount of oil spilled into the Yellowstone River was 1509 barrels of oil, equivalent to about 63,000 gallons of oil. The company agreed to pay the state of Montana $1.6 million in damages in penalties. Originally, the estimate was 1000 barrels, but Governer Brian Schweitzer disputed this number, saying it was too low.
