In a study of bottled water consumption for 2006, the Pacific Institute estimated that making plastic water bottles for US consumers required over 17 million barrels of oil. This isn’t counting the oil used as fuel to transport water bottles to stores. In addition, the water bottling industry was responsible for 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution that year as well. Over the last few years, this wasteful industry has received more and more well-deserved criticism from environmental advocates across the country.
