Post-spill estimates have ranged from 4.4 million barrels (link below) to 4.9 million (what CNN was reporting when the leak was shut off). If it was 5 million barrels total, just to put it in perspective, that is about one-quarter of one day’s consumption in the US (19.6 million barrels per day), or 6 hours worth of US consumption. Not trying to diminish the disaster but to offer perspective on that volume.
Also, it has been shut down, so “so far” is kind of a mistaken phrase – there is no more coming out.
