In the United States, it requires more than 17 million barrels of oil to produce the bottled water demanded. This is just production, not the oil used in packaging and shipping. This amount could fuel 1 million cars for a year. One website says to picture a bottle of water filled 1/4 of the way with oil – that’s the amount of oil used to make and ship that bottled water. Plus, an estimated 120 grams of greenhouse gas are produced per bottle of water. That adds up.
17 million barrels of oil is less than one day’s consumption by the United States. Far, far more oil is used by driving vehicles.
