Far too much. Our automobiles use it, anything in this country that is plastic (which is almost everything) is made with it, even things like furniture are sometimes coated with a form as a flame retardant. Shoes contain some, A lot of cosmetics even contain it. We are pretty much surrounded by it all the time. But it isn’t just America, it is the whole world.
The actual number (June 2010) was about 19,300,000 barrels per day. Of that, 70% was in the transportation sector. Less than 3% of US oil consumption goes to make the feedstocks to produce all the plastic, synthetic rubber, paint and other chemicals, etc. that we use.
