With the current projects that have been approved, about 3 million barrels of mock crude will be produced daily by 2018. This is still a growing area of oil production so the numbers have some unknown factors at the moment. It is estimated that oil sands actually produce about three times more CO2 emissions than regular oil production. The process, while young, has already shown some health effects and numerous social issues around Alberta, Canada where a lot of the sands are being harvested. A very interesting topic in energy that will definitely be worth following over the next few years.
