    (This is the kind of question you can answer by a good search. I did “china historical oil consumption”. I don’t have a perfect answer, after looking for 5 minutes, but I’m steering you on the right track. It’s possible good records were not kept, or are still secret: Note that in 1950 China was involved in a major war with the US in Korea.)

    The answer is almost certainly far less than 1,600,000 barrels per day. (Compare that to 7,850,000 in 2008.)
