The amount of nitrogen that the body absorbs depends on how deep you dive and how long you stay underwater. The bends, also known as decompression sickness, is commonly brought on by rising up from the depths of the water too quickly and the nitrogen forming bubbles in body tissues. Therefore, it’s not how much you absorb but how much time you give the dissolved nitrogen to leave your body as you head back up to the surface.
