How much of New England forests were cleared by farmers in the 1700’s and 1800’s?

You know, a fair amount of forests were cut down to make way for new farms and homesteads in the NE area. However, many of the settlements that we see still standing today were created because they were in a costal clearing area. However, these made way for larger cities, but the forests in surrounding areas were chopped down to support a new America.
