The environment committee of the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to delay final decisions on new standards until June 2010. International shipping contributed 2.7 percent of global emissions in 2007. That number may rise to 18 percent by 2050, so the UN wants to act now. The European Union says that it will act on its own to curb cargo ship pollution if the IMO does not succeed in coming up with a solution.
