Increases in yields from machinery in industrial agriculture comes for many reasons. Machines allow farmers to plant crops quicker, easier and with more uniformity. It also allows for easier harvest, processing and distribution. Overall, machines are the number one reason for our increased ability to procue food. Machinery allows yields to increase by as much as 60 percent through improved efficiency. Additionally, machines have allowed farmers to tend more land. While the number of farmers have shrunk, the size of farms have swalled from a few hundred acres to thousands of acres since the 1950s.
