According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, as of 2011, the United States “now has over 3,650 MW of installed solar electric capacity, enough to power 730,000 homes.” This means that, roughly, 1 MW of solar energy can power 200 homes. According to the U.S. Census Bureau as of 2010, there were 131,704,730 housing units total in the country. This means that only about .55% of the U.S. homes received electricity via solar energy.
According to these statistics, 130,974,730 more homes would need to be powered by solar energy to reach 100% usage. This means that about 654,874 more MW of would need to be produced.
