How much more safe is it to take the bus vs. driving a car?

I am not certain in which way you are asking.  If you mean safer for the environment, definitely.  Buses, though creating more emissions than trains, produce much less than cars.  A fully loaded bus produces about 1.54g/pm compared to the 2.06 of an individual car.  This is a very significant difference.  If, instead, you are referring to safety of life in riding a bus compared to a car, statistics show that only four bus wrecks ended in deaths, compared to the 40,000 people killed in car crashes.
