How much more or less energy does the production or recycling of aluminum take?

Aluminum is a very energy-intensive material to manufacture from raw materials, so recycling aluminum products produces in some of the most energy and pollution savings of any commonly-recycled material.  Recycling aluminum requires only 5% of the energy that would be needed to manufacture the same amount of aluminum material from scratch, and produces only 5% of the greenhouse emissions as well.  Aluminum materials can be recycled again and again without declining in quality, and are extremely cost-effective to recycle, too.  Recycling a single aluminum can saves an amount of energy equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline.
