Smart grids have tons of environmental benefits. They will allow consumers to manage their power usage more effectively. Also, they will provide consumers with financial incentives for reducing power consumption. Metering will also help people calculate their carbon footprint and make adjustments.
Smart grids will have the capability of warning or completely avoiding blackouts. Also they will be better able to monitor power use and warn customers of peak power times, allowing people to understand and limit their own excessive use. Updating to new technology will allow power companies to identify problems and hopefully it will eventually be able to store and transport power over long distances to where it is needed, allowing renewable energy sources to be shared.
