They are a good deal more effective. Direct inject engines use an air to fuel ratio of 40:1 while a normal gas engine uses 14.7:1. The direct inject engine allows for more conservative fuel use. Direct inject engines also spray fuel where the combustion chamber is the hottest, thereby burning the fuel more completely.
