Walmart is beginning to make more of an effort to be more eco-friendly, but there is quite a lot that Walmart still needs to do. For starters, WalMart could sell more organic and sustainably produced merchandise. They would also need to make the stores themselves more eco-friendly.
Wal-Mart has begun to take small steps toward eco-friendliness. The company has begun to sell implement the use of reusable shopping bags and have starting stocking local produce. However, a huge chain of Wal-Mart’s proportion is far from environmentally friendly. A new Wal-Mart store opens approximately every two business days, and many locations take up valuable farmland. Aside from slowing the opening of these stores, Wal-Mart could be more conscious of store placement to avoid taking up precious farmland and contributing to urban sprawl. Wal-Mart has also contributed to water pollution by leaving pesticides and fertilizers in the parking lots of their stores, which was then carried into rivers and streams by rain water. Wal-Mart needs to be more conscious about the way the pesticides and fertilizers they carry effect the water pollution of the surrounding areas.
