Purely by the population figures, the population grew from 4.4 billion in 1980 to 4.8 billion in 1985 to 6.7 billion in 2008. So that’s an increase of 66% from the beginning and 72% from the middle of the 80′s, so food supply has to grow accordingly (assuming the consumption per person did not change much).
