I’m having trouble finding any good data for the carbon emissions from oil drilling, but I’ve found reliable data for refining and shipping. The total carbon emissions from shipping and refining one gallon of oil that’s shipped from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (the largest seaport in Saudi Arabia) to Baytown, Texas (the largest oil refinery in the United States) is 5.8 pounds of CO2 emissions.
Compare this to 19.4 pounds of CO2 emissions from burning that same gallon.
Keep in mind, this does not factor in the drilling process which is very carbon intensive.
