How much more carbon does a plane produce than a car?

According to a article by Matt McDermott, driving a car solo from one end of the country to the other (about 2900 miles) can be just as bad as flying the same distance. Based on a 23 mile-per-gallon average, the car puts out about 2,446 pounds of carbon dioxide, whereas a plane emits about 2,500 pounds. Of course, planes can carry hundreds of passengers and reduce the trip to a matter of hours rathe than days; but if you’re going to cross the country you might as well see it while you’re at it. Bus is the best option for long distance travel, and while it may take you longer and be less comfortable, if you’re eco-conscious, you’ll lose a lot less sleep over it when you finally reach your destination.
