Pacific Gas and Electric, the primary energy provider to the state of California, recently signed contracts for the purchase of 800 megawatts of solar power, a sufficient amount to power 239,000 homes per year. This increase – which is expected to accomplish a doubling in the US’s solar output – will primarily come from massive solar power facilities to be built in California under the companies OptiSolar and SunPower. The cost of investment may be as high as 26 to 33 billion dollars per year.
