The most significant federal smart grid investments in recent years have been in the development of the Smart Grid Investment Program in 2007 and the funds poured into this program as a result of the February 2009 stimulus package.
Originally authorized in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the Smart Grid Investment Program has received funds ranging from $300,000 to $200 million by fiscal year. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of February 2009 (the stimulus, or Recovery Act) then authorized $4.5 billion for research and development and projects for the program.
