The US government settled with Native Americans for a total of $3.4 billion. The settlement for mismanagement of trust fund accounts held by hundreds of thousands of Native Americans. The settlement ends a 13-year battle regarding disputes that the US Dept. of the Interior mismanaged Native American lands for more than 100 years.
Under the settlement, more than $1.4 billion will be dispersed among more than 300,000 Native Americans to compensate royalty claims. And the reamining $2 billion will buy back and consolidate tribal lands lost by previous generations.
Elouise Cobell, a Blackfeet Indian in Montana was the lead plaintiff in the 1996 suit.
