How much money does the government give to small farms?

Most small farms, up to about 100 acres do not receive any type of federal money through subsidies. Some money may get there indirectly, but it is not usually intentional. In New Jersey at least, farmer’s usually get a brake on their taxes and free advertising from the state.

The US government subsidizes big farms because they are the most productive, but there are very few people who live as subsistence farmers in the US, so there is no subsidy for those farms.
