How much money does a LEED home save through its life through energy savings?

The average LEED home saves about 40% of the money a normal home would spend on utilities.  At the end of 2009, the average home spent about $285 on utilities.  A LEED home, after 40% savings, would only pay $171 in utilities.  By choosing energy smart alternatives, LEED home owners save almost half of the money a normal home spends.
