How much money does the government spend on subsidizing agriculture?

Around $20 billion per year in direct payments; more in terms of tax benefits that are available to most industries.

In case you’re interested in statistics for various states/counties, the Environmental Working Group offers a great resource that shows exactly where subsidies are going. Often, it is the largest producers (think ConAgra and friends) that reap the largest benefits of agricultural subsidies, not the small family farmers who need it to get by.
