According to a Chicago Tribune article published in April of 2011, BP has paid 3.6 billion dollars toward a fund set up to help victims of the oil spill. BP said it would dish out 20 billion before the end for victims alone. This, of course, is out of a company charge of $40 billion (all together). This $40 billion was/is spread out between relief efforts, clean up, and fines.

In late 2010, BP put its cost estimates at $40 billion. Since BP claimed full responsibility, this $40 billion goes towards past clean-up efforts as well as future clean-up efforts, compensation claims, and fines from the US government. government.
