China is actually spending money to produce the renewable energy they need, not to bring in energy from other places. In the last two years or so, they’ve made a huge investment into lowering their energy consumption and reduce their emissions. They’ve done this by offering loans, giving stimulus funds and other credits to their domestic producers. Their biggest investment is in solar energy. According to the US Energy Department, China provided around $30 billion in credits and incentives to its biggest solar manufactures. The country recently set a new record for renewable energy storage and just announced this month that they now lead the world in wind turbine production. So while a direct monetary number is hard to provide, by all accounts they are leading the world in solar and wind energy production.
