Currently, commercially available LED technology is still in its infancy. In contrast, fluorescent lighting technology has not only been available for decades, but has been given the bulk of the attention with regards to energy efficiency.
Ultimately what this means is that, although LED light generation has been shown to be more efficient than fluorescent, the cost of investing in LED lighting far outweighs the potential energy savings. Thus, if a business wanted to light its signs in the most cost effective manner, it would choose a fluorescent lighting system.
(Keep in mind that over the coming years, it is entirely possible that this analysis may change)
How much money a business can save by switching to LED signs depends on what type of bulbs are being used to light the sign and how much energy the sign is consuming. LED lights use about 1/3 of the energy that compact fluorescent bulbs use and 1/30 of the energy that incandescent bulbs use. LEDs also last 10 times longer than compact fluorescent bulbs, are durable, are mercury free, and while they are more expensive in the short term over the long term of owning and operating a business they will reduce energy consumption and save money.
