Google has invested a lot in the environment. Some of its recent investments so far this year include: $168 million in a solar power tower plant in the Mojave Desert, $280 million for a company called SolarCity to provide more solar power to homes, and $5 million for a solar plant in Germany. Here are the links to the articles that describe each of the projects.

Even though it’s not clear exactly how much Amazon.com is spending on environmentally friendly buildings, four of the eleven buildings at its Seattle headquarters have been deemed LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, which means they have been recognized for sustainable design and construction methods.  Amazon’s offices in Germany have also been certified as eco-friendly, and their warehouses in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Arizona received LEED certification for their interiors.

So, though we don’t know the amount of money specifically, we know that building “green” requires some extra up-front investment for future benefits.

Although this article was posted in 2006, it paints a picture of a good sum of money being invested in Green technologies. Several examples in this article include

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, donating $84 million to a California company for the construction of bio-refineries.

John Doerr, the venture capitalist who invested early in Amazon.com and Google, set up a $100 million fund to invest in green tech.
