Solar power accounts for an incredibly tiny proportion of electricity in the US. All renewable sources other than hydropower account for 4% of the total. Solar’s share of that 4% is less than 1% of that – 1% of 4% is four ten-thousandths of the total.
Given that solar power costs a fair amount, it is unlikely that we are saving any money using solar; on the contrary we are spending more proportionately than on other forms – probably significantly more on in incremental (per-kilowatt hour) basis. The point of solar and any renewable is to reduce reliance on non-renewables (because they will run out) and reduce the carbon impact of hydrocarbon fuels. It is not because it is cheaper, not at present – because it isn’t.
