How much money are we saving by using solar energy in America?

Solar power accounts for an incredibly tiny proportion of electricity in the US. All renewable sources other than hydropower account for 4% of the total. Solar’s share of that 4% is less than 1% of that – 1% of 4% is four ten-thousandths of the total.

Given that solar power costs a fair amount, it is unlikely that we are saving any money using solar; on the contrary we are spending more proportionately than on other forms – probably significantly more on in incremental (per-kilowatt hour) basis. The point of solar and any renewable is to reduce reliance on non-renewables (because they will run out) and reduce the carbon impact of hydrocarbon fuels. It is not because it is cheaper, not at present – because it isn’t.
